Type of Questions You Can Expect in the PMP Test

PMP is one of the most popular certifications for project professionals. To achieve this, you have to go through a process. Ultimately, you need to pass a computer test in a controlled environment. Taking the PMP exam is not very easy.

It takes many hours of study and preparation. It requires you to master the material and know the basics of each methodology used in project management.

In the PMP exam, you will attempt 200 questions. These questions will test your full knowledge of project management concepts and your ability to apply that knowledge in specific project scenarios. This helps you know what type of questions to expect on the test.

These questions come in various ways, and to prepare for them well, you will need to understand them correctly. Each type has its own goal, and collectively they make this certification exam extremely difficult.

During the PMP exam, you will see seven different types of questions:

  • ITTO-based questions
  • Situation-based questions
  • Definition-based questions
  • Formula-based question
  • Interpretational-based questions
  • Diagram-based questions
  • Professional and social responsibility-based questions

1. ITTO-based questions

ITTO stands for inputs, tools, techniques, and output. You will see many ITTO questions on the exam. You may be prompted to select the appropriate input, tool, and technique or output for a specific process. To answer these types of questions, you must have read the PMBOK Guide several times and understand its processes.

2. Situation-based questions

Many of the questions (approximately 60%) are situational in nature. The answer to these types of questions and the options provided may seem vague, and you may think that several of them are the correct answer. So, choose the answer very carefully.

3. Definition-based questions

These are the simplest types of questions. You have to define different terms, such as the definition of risk or residual risk. To solve these types of questions based on definitions, you will need to read reference books to learn terminology and understand different concepts.

4. Formula-based questions

You will see that these questions mainly come from the areas of cost and time knowledge. Make sure you have a written list of formulas that you remember and can apply them if needed.

5. Interpretational-based questions

In these types of questions, you will be given the data and analyze it to find the correct answer. Clear concepts and practices of mathematical questions are required to solve these types of questions.

6. Diagrams-based questions

It is also possible to display graphics in the test. They can show you a diagram and then ask you based on the diagram. If you are wondering, each question is independent, so there won’t be a situation where you have a diagram, and you have to answer the next three questions based on that diagram.

7. Professional and social responsibility-based questions

The test also analyzes your understanding of professional liability. There is a code of conduct that you must sign before you can take the exam. It is recommended that you read this code of conduct. You should be very careful not to violate any of these types of rules when examining. PMI expects you to follow the letter of the law.

To pass the test, you must achieve at least a target score in 4 of the five process groups, i.e., initiate, Plan, Execute, Track, Monitor, and Close. Prepare your questions based on these types of questions you can expect in the PMP test.
