Can You Drink Water or Eat During an Online Proctored Exam?

Online Proctoring Rules

Water is usually permitted during an online proctored exam, in a clear container with no label. Food is not permitted. Neither rule is universal, because your certification vendor can be stricter than the proctoring platform, so confirm it for your specific exam before test day.

If you take nothing else from this: pour your water into a clear glass before check-in. That one step avoids the most common version of this problem.

What counts as an acceptable container

Where water is allowed, the requirement is that the proctor can see there is nothing concealed in or on it.

Acceptable:

  • A clear glass.
  • A clear plastic or glass bottle with the label removed entirely.

Not acceptable:

  • A bottle with the label still on, including a partially peeled one.
  • An opaque bottle, flask, or sports bottle.
  • A coffee mug or travel cup.
  • Anything with printed text on it.

The reasoning is straightforward once you see it from the proctor's side: a label is a place notes can be written or hidden, and an opaque container cannot be verified. This is not about the drink.

Expect to be asked to show the container to the camera during the room scan. Have it on the desk when the scan starts rather than fetching it afterwards.

Water only

Where a drink is permitted, it is water. Coffee, tea, energy drinks, and soft drinks are generally prohibited, partly because they usually arrive in unacceptable containers and partly because vendors restrict the permission to water specifically.

If you rely on caffeine, have it before you sit down, bearing in mind that a large coffee an hour before a three-hour exam with no bathroom break is a poor combination.

Food is not allowed

Food is prohibited during online proctored exams. There is no version of this where a snack on the desk is fine.

If you have a medical condition that requires eating during an exam, such as diabetes, this is handled through the accommodations process with your certification vendor, and it must be approved before you schedule. A proctor cannot grant it in the moment.

The longer exam problem

The real difficulty is not thirst. It is that most Pearson VUE online exams do not allow unscheduled breaks, so drinking freely during a three or four hour exam creates a problem you cannot solve without ending your session.

A workable approach:

  • Hydrate normally through the day, then taper in the hour or two before your appointment.
  • Use the bathroom immediately before check-in, not before you start preparing the room.
  • Keep water on the desk for sips rather than steady drinking.
  • Check in advance whether your specific exam includes a scheduled break. Some longer certification exams do, and that changes the calculation entirely.

That last point is worth checking rather than assuming, because it varies by vendor and by exam rather than by platform.

Where the rules come from

The proctoring platform sets a baseline, and your certification vendor sets its own policy on top. Where they differ, the vendor's rule is the one enforced.

Some vendors prohibit all consumables including water. Others permit water without fuss. The only reliable source is the candidate agreement for your specific certification, which is also where you will find the break policy.

If you are unsure

Sit the exam without a drink. It is a three-hour inconvenience rather than a risk, and it removes a category of check-in friction. Arriving with a container that turns out to be prohibited costs time you may not have, and arguing about it with a proctor never succeeds.

If you do bring water and the proctor asks you to remove it, remove it without discussion.

Medical accommodations

If you need water, food, or medication during an exam for medical reasons, request an accommodation through the certification vendor well before you schedule. Approved accommodations are attached to your appointment and communicated to the proctor.

Do not rely on explaining a condition at check-in. Proctors have no authority to approve exceptions, and attempting to negotiate one wastes your check-in window.

Rules on drinks, food, and breaks vary between certification vendors and change over time. Confirm the policy for your specific exam in your vendor's candidate agreement before test day.
