Exam Eligibility

It is mandatory for candidates to meet the following eligibility requirements in order to take the PCI examination:

Without a higher education degree:

You must have five years of investigation experience, including at least two years in case management. You should have four years of investigation experience if you already possess an APP.

With a higher education degree:

You should have at least a Master's degree from an accredited college or university and have three years of investigative and management experience, including at least two years of experience in case management.

OR

Candidates must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education or an international equivalent. They must have at least four years of investigative experience (or three years if they already hold an APP), including at least two years as a case manager.

Exam Format

There are approximately 140 multiple-choice questions on the PCI certification test: 125 are scoreable, and 15 are pretest questions. The test covers three major areas (domains).

PCI exam specifications are based on each domain's tasks, knowledge, and skills. The percentage of total exam questions depends on the relative importance of the domains.

The exam will assess your knowledge and skills in three primary areas of competency that professional investigators have identified as mandatory.

Domain 1: Case Management (35%)

• Examine the argument for ethical conflicts.
• Analyze and appraise case components, methods, and dangers.
• Determine fact-finding objectives and approaches by analyzing procedural options.
• Identify and manage the fact-finding resources required to complete the case objectives.
• Identify, measure, and execute possibilities for improving fact-finding methods.

Domain 2: Investigative Techniques and Procedures (50%)

• Conduct a police investigation using physical, behavioral, and electronic evidence to gather important information.
• Conduct interviews with people in order to collect relevant data.
• Gather and save potential evidential items for evaluation and analysis.
• Conduct physical and electronic data analysis to get appropriate data.
• Collaborate with and obtain data from various agencies and groups information that is pertinent
• Collect relevant data using specialized fact-finding techniques.

Domain 3: Case Presentation (15%)

• Prepare a report to substantiate investigative findings.
