If a proctor terminated your exam, the session is over, the result does not stand, and what happens next is decided by your certification vendor rather than by the proctoring platform. Act today: contact the vendor while the session recording is recent, and write down exactly what happened before your memory blurs. Those two steps determine most of what follows.

Termination is not automatically a finding of cheating. It is a record that testing conditions were broken. The distinction matters for how you respond.

Why proctors terminate sessions

The common reasons, roughly in order of how often they occur:

  • Another person entered the room or was audible.
  • You left your seat or moved out of the camera frame.
  • A phone or second device was visible or detected.
  • An item appeared on your desk that was not there during the room scan.
  • Repeated warnings were not acted on.
  • Talking, whispering, or reading questions aloud that continued after a warning.
  • A second display connected partway through the session.
  • A technical fault the proctor could not resolve within the reconnection window.

That last one is a different category, and it is worth identifying clearly because it usually has a better outcome.

The distinction that shapes your case

Technical termination means the platform or a connection failed. Where the fault was demonstrably on the platform side, a free rescheduled appointment is a reasonable expectation and vendors grant them routinely.

Conduct termination means a rule was broken, whether or not you intended it. Here the vendor decides between a forfeited fee, a waiting period, or in serious cases a ban.

Many real situations sit between the two. If your internet dropped and you stood up to check the router, that is a technical problem and a conduct problem at once, and how you describe it matters.

What happens to your fee and result

Expect the result to be void in all cases. The fee depends:

  • Platform-side technical fault: usually a free reschedule.
  • Your own equipment, power, or internet: varies by vendor, and forfeiting the fee is a common outcome.
  • Conduct violation: the fee is normally forfeited, and a waiting period may apply before you can book again.

Vendors do not publish these decisions as a simple table, because they assess cases individually. That is why the quality of your report matters.

Do this today

Contact the certification vendor's candidate support or exam security team, not only Pearson VUE or PSI. The platform records what happened; the vendor decides.

Provide:

  • Your candidate identifier and appointment number.
  • The exam name, date, and time including time zone.
  • How far into the exam you were.
  • A plain, factual account of what happened.
  • Any error messages, and what the proctor said in chat.
  • Whether you believe the cause was technical or a misunderstanding.

Before you leave your desk, take screenshots of anything still on screen and write down the time. Specific, contemporaneous detail is the difference between a successful request and a declined one.

Writing an account that helps you

Be factual and brief. Reviewers read a lot of these, and emotion does not move them.

Effective: "At approximately 14:20, around 45 minutes into the exam, my housemate opened the door briefly despite having been asked not to. She did not speak to me or look at my screen and left immediately. The proctor terminated the session at approximately 14:22."

Ineffective: "This is completely unfair, I did nothing wrong and I have wasted my money."

The first gives a reviewer something to check against the recording. The second gives them nothing.

What tends to succeed and what does not

Appeals succeed most often when there is a specific, verifiable, innocent explanation, raised immediately, and consistent with the recording. A documented technical fault, a brief and clearly innocuous interruption, or a proctor instruction that was ambiguous are all arguable.

Appeals rarely succeed when the argument is that the rule itself is unreasonable, when weeks have passed, when the account is vague, or when the recording shows a pattern rather than a single moment. Remember the standard is whether conditions held, not whether you gained an advantage.

If the outcome is a waiting period or ban

Ask the vendor, in writing, for the specific policy applied, the duration, and whether an appeal route exists. Keep the correspondence.

If you hold other certifications from that vendor, ask explicitly whether they are affected, since some findings can extend to existing credentials. Better to know than to discover it later.

Before you book again

Whatever the outcome, do not rebook until you have fixed the cause. If the termination was environmental, that means changing the environment rather than resolving to be more careful:

  • Lock the door, and tell the household in explicit terms rather than general ones.
  • Put your phone in another room rather than face down on the desk.
  • Clear the desk entirely, including blank paper.
  • Physically unplug every additional display.
  • Sort out power and connection reliability, including a backup.
  • If you tend to mouth words while reading, practise reading silently.

And if the honest conclusion is that your home cannot support a long exam, book a test centre. After a termination, many candidates make that switch, and it is a sensible response rather than a defeat.

Termination handling, fee policies, and appeal routes differ between certification vendors and change over time. Contact your vendor promptly and refer to the candidate agreement for your specific exam.
